Frequently Asked Questions

Buying laptops and computers can be confusing, how many GB do I need? What's a TB? Do I need cores? So many questions. We've done our best to answer common ones below, but if you're not sure just get in touch.

Can I just configure my own laptop?

You definitely can! Buying a laptop requires a little consideration, and setting it up requires a little bit of time but it's definitely something you can do, and we're happy to help you out.

That said, sometimes people find it a lot easier to order a new laptop for a new clerk or councillor and have us handle it all and just ship a fully configured ready to go laptop right to them. Both are great options, but one of them is just a tiny bit less hassle for you and you get ultimate peace of mind it's done right.

What brand of laptop will it be?

Typically we provide Lenovo or Dell laptops depending on the current stock availability, we've price our packages in general terms to give us flexibility to supply the most cost effective laptop at the time you order.

Can I have an Apple MacBook?

We don't supply Apple devices at this time, but you certainly can order one yourself and we'd be happy to support you and your Apple device. Get in touch to chat it over and we'll discuss how best to help you.

What version of Windows will be installed?

Any laptop we provide will ship with the latest version of Windows and all available updates applied, at this time that would be Windows 11.

Will you install anti-virus and cyber security software?

As standard we'll make sure that Windows is configured with the most secure settings possible, including making sure that Windows Defender is installed and operational.

That said we offer a managed cyber security solution that is far more comprehensive for maximum security and peace of mind. Our solution includes anti-virus, anti-malware, website protection, and disk encryption should your laptop be lost or stolen. If you're worried about security and want to ensure everything is as secure as possible then please get in touch to chat about it.

How long does it take to configure my new laptop?

We would generally advise to allow a week or so for us to order your laptop, configure it, and then ship it to you. It can often be much quicker but it's better to order in plenty of time just in case there are any delays or we are particularly busy for some reason.

Does the laptop come with Microsoft Office?

No, by default the laptop will come with the software included with Windows which includes a basic email client. We can install a free office suite such as Open Office or Libre Office.

We do recommend Microsoft Office suite and can provide an annual license for Microsoft Apps for Business which includes the full Office suite. Let us know when you order your laptop that you'd also like to order Microsoft Office.

How much disk space is included with cloud backup?

There is no disk limit on our cloud backup service, we license you based on a per device basis so you can back up as much data as you need from that laptop.

How long do you keep backups for?

We retain backups for 30 days by default, but if you need a longer retention period or a custom backup schedule then just let us know and we can see what we can do to acomodate you.

Do my IT support hours roll over?

No, you pay for hours of support to use in an annual period and we plan our staffing to support those hours, if we let customers roll over hours we risk not having enough staff available which then impacts on other customers.

Do you access my laptop remotely?

We can do, but only with your permission.

With IT support we install a small piece of software on your computer that connects back to our systems and provides vital information such as software versions, disk space usage, update status etc. This software also lets us connect remotely, but we only do that with permission, and when we're connected you'll be alerted by the software that someone has connected.
